Sweden’s PAIN OF SALVATION are likely the very opposite of a predictable and standardized act and they once more prove their unmatched reputation as true artists, modern rock expressionists as well as progressive metal pioneers by re-visiting their 2002 album masterpiece “Remedy Lane”. Following up their latest studio releases “Road Salt One” (2010) and “Road Salt Two” (2011) as well as the acoustic album “Falling Home” (2014), PAIN OF SALVATION are looking back to their much acclaimed “Remedy Lane” epos and offering a new shape for the ground-breaking and genre-bending material it contains. Always eager to improve the album’s character, PAIN OF SALVATION’s Daniel Gildenlöw recently teamed up with old companion and mixing engineer wizard Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Symphony X, Devin Townsend, Haken, etc.) for a new sonic take on the original recordings as well as its intense full-album live performance from ProgPower USA Festival 2014. “Survivors” is the debut album by British heavy metal stalwarts Samson, originally released in 1979. Featuring founding members guitar virtuoso Mike Orlando and famed vocalist Russell Allen (Symphony X) alongside the recently added Dave Z. (bass / Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Doctor Butcher) and Jordan Cannata (drums), ADRENALINE MOB developed into a household name for top notch, modern hard rock with a distinct metallic edge. It has a unique energy, like it’s always on the move. We wanted the songs to drive. Like when we’re in a car. We wanted the songs to move.” Recorded once again at Sonic Stomp Studios over a year-plus period, “We the People” sounds huge. NIGHTBRINGER are pushing forward in their fast-track evolution with grim determination. Their forthcoming fifth full-length 'Terra Damnata' takes at least as big a step into new musical dimensions as its predecessor 'Ego Dominus Tuus' (2014) – yet without straying from the band's original black course. While 'Ego Dominus Tuus' amalgamated traces of quintessential elements taken as inspiration from EMPEROR, DARK FUNERAL, and DIMMU BORGIR among other black classics into a dark American alloy, 'Terra Damnata' seems to systematically sever such ties to the previous orthodoxy found on 'Hierophany of the Open Grave' (2011). NIGHTBRINGER have sharpened their claws and unafraid of dissonance dare to take their songwriting where it hurts.
Madness reigns! BENIGHTED deliver the radical soundtrack to these savage times. With their new full-length ‘Necrobreed’, the French sidestep the steadily growing complexity of their previous albums by recalibrating their sound along their roots. ‘Necrobreed’ is the result of modern violence combined with an undercurrent of old school feeling. BENIGHTED keep their grinding influences but classic death metal clearly shows through the fabric. Those insane pig squeals are backed-up by massive growling and guest performances by vocalists Trevor Strnad (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER) and Arno (BLACK BOMB A). Doom godfathers THE OBSESSED return with Sacred, their first studio album in over 20 years. Led by legendary frontman Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, etc.), THE OBSESSED originally formed in 1976 and released three seminal stoner / doom albums in the early 90’s, including The Church Within which has been hailed as one of the important records in the genre’s history. Now, after reforming in 2016, the band has returned with renewed energy and purpose, sounding heavier and more relevant than ever before. On Sacred, THE OBSESSED double down on enormous, heaving riffs and pummeling low-end across 12 tracks of eternal doom. Rounded out by Wino’s lyrical honesty and iconic throaty vocals, Sacred is an album that further pushes THE OBSESSED into the annals of heavy metal history and that was well worth the two-plus decade wait.
Celebrate the return of the VAMPIRE! The impatiently awaited 2017 studio album by Gothenburg’s most horrid death/thrash export unleashes a macabre yet atmospheric sonic whirlwind living up to its title “With Primeval Force”. Sporting influences from Dissection, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Slayer, Sarcófago, traces of Autopsy, Master’s Hammer, and Possessed, VAMPIRE manage to create a unique musical formula that touches upon the aesthetics of Hammer Horror and the hideous yet seductive imagery crafted by H.P. Lovecraft, Bram Stoker, and M.R. James in terms of lyrics and visuals. “It has a more mature feel to it,” guitarist Black String states when comparing it with the much-lauded 2014 self-titled debut. “As the cover art by Nick Keller suggests, the musical and lyrical horizons have broadened; every song feels as if it lives its own life, still well-placed in the general picture. I wanted the band to go for a more introverted and cold sound, as a distinction to some of the chorus-laden ‘fist in the air’ songs on our debut. So, you could say that “With Primeval Force” generally is both colder and more atmospheric than our debut; a bit less ’traditional’ songwriting in our terms. Despite that, the album somehow embraces bits and pieces of the last 35 years or so of metal music. In that sense, it holds on to a lot of tradition and the VAMPIRE mark is still very present.” Featuring individual illustrations per song courtesy of Tribulation’s Jonathan Hultén, “With Primeval Force” offers devastating, Teutonic thrash flavoured tracks like “Ghoul Wind” but also epic, gloomy pieces like the majestic “Revenants”. Also, the formats do not disappoint as the album is available as CD digipak that folds out in a cross shape as well as stunning vinyl edition including a 12-page LP booklet.
ART OF ANARCHY is one of the rare rock bands where each member has a strong identity, and together creates something special. No filler, just raw talent, and dedication to the music and being true to who they are. The members have collectively sold tens of millions of albums worldwide and have a rock pedigree that most artists would be content to rest their laurels on. But while AOA possess the star power of a rock “super group” in spades, the band’s focus is squarely on songwriting and musical craft. Lead guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal hails formerly from Guns N’ Roses, while bassist John Moyer first rose to fame as a member of Disturbed. Twin brothers Jon Votta (guitar) and Vince Votta (drums), meanwhile, first gained renown as fixtures on the New York music scene. The most recent addition to the group is Grammy Award winner Scott Stapp, the founder and lead singer of Creed. Stapp will be replacing the late Scott Weiland (of Stone Temple Pilots) as AOA’s lead singer. AOA evolved organically out of an 18-year friendship between Bumblefoot and the Votta brothers. Jon Votta came to Bumblefoot with the idea of putting together a new band with a diverse group of talent and a uniquely melodic and aggressive sound. The group released their self-titled debut album, ART OF ANARCHY in June 2015, featuring Scott Weiland on vocals. “Black Metal” is the second album by English heavy metal pioneers Venom. Released hot upon the heels of their first assault came Venom’s nearly as crucial second album, 1982’s Black Metal, whose title alone still lends itself to the most uncompromising strain of heavy metal in existence today. The band wasn’t popular or successful at the time the album was released, but they showed a legion of metal heads they could gather some friends, get wasted, and crank out an album’s worth of extreme darkness.
