Sweden’s PAIN OF SALVATION are likely the very opposite of a predictable and standardized act and they once more prove their unmatched reputation as true artists, modern rock expressionists as well as progressive metal pioneers by re-visiting their 2002 album masterpiece “Remedy Lane”. Following up their latest studio releases “Road Salt One” (2010) and “Road Salt Two” (2011) as well as the acoustic album “Falling Home” (2014), PAIN OF SALVATION are looking back to their much acclaimed “Remedy Lane” epos and offering a new shape for the ground-breaking and genre-bending material it contains. Always eager to improve the album’s character, PAIN OF SALVATION’s Daniel Gildenlöw recently teamed up with old companion and mixing engineer wizard Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Symphony X, Devin Townsend, Haken, etc.) for a new sonic take on the original recordings as well as its intense full-album live performance from ProgPower USA Festival 2014. Daniel Gildenlöw further comments: “Jens Bogren, aka Fascination Street Studios, approached us a few years after the release of “Remedy Lane“, saying he was a fan of the band and kindly offered his services. He was later involved in “BE” and “Scarsick“, but always in the periphery, since we were taking new directions in our sound and production by then. His true strength lay in that impressive wall-of-sound type production that we had been aiming for with“ The Perfect Element“ and “Remedy Lane“, and I always wondered how those albums would have sounded in the care of his skillful hands. Maybe it was time to find out?”

Anneke van Giersbergen, forever known as the former vocalist for melancholic metallers The Gathering and for her collaborations with the Devin Townsend Project and Arjen Lucassen (i.e. The Gentle Storm), formed VUUR in 2016, a new progressive metal band featuring renowned drummer Ed Warby (Gorefest, Ayreon) and some of the best heavy metal players in The Netherlands! The name VUUR – translated from Dutch as “fire”, which can also be interpreted to mean “passion” or “drive” – was chosen as a moniker to represent Anneke's metal side, with the idea that when fans buy a ticket with the VUUR name on it they will be getting her heavy progressive music, while an Anneke van Giersbergen show will be entirely different. “It's like I'm searching for contradictions,” Anneke says of splitting her focus in two. “I want the heavy to be really heavy, and the soft acoustic stuff that I can do can be almost silent and inward. I'm trying to find those outer limits. I'm still writing and collaborating with different people, so VUUR's style is still kind of different from The Gathering and The Gentle Storm. VUUR's music has the melancholy of The Gathering and certain elements from The Gentle Storm, but it's darker with fewer folk elements. ”Den Förstfödde” is Arckanum’s 9th studio album after 25 years of existence.

THE LURKING FEAR is no longer just the title of a classic H.P. Lovecraft horror story. It now represents a new five-piece death metal band featuring some of the finest musicians to come out of Sweden. Consisting of Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates/Disfear) on vocals, guitarists Jonas Stålhammar (God Macabre/Bombs Of Hades) and Fredrik Wallenberg (Skitsystem), bassist Andreas Axelson (Tormented/Disfear)and Adrian Erlandsson (At The Gates/The Haunted) on drums, the “supergroup” tag might come to mind, but as Tompa explains that is far from reality: “We want to steer away from the project / supergroup label. THE LURKING FEAR just happens to be five guys that are in or have been in other bands for a long period of time. We’ve all known each other since 1989 – me and Jonas were writing letters back and forth and tape trading – so I have no idea why it took so long for us to get together and do this.” And everyone who appreciates pure, timeless death metal inspired by Autopsy, (early) Death, Morbid Angel, Possessed or Repulsion will be beyond happy that they finally did as “Out Of The Voiceless Grave” is one hell of an album. Written within a mere two months, it strikes with an authentic, furious intensity and successfully avoids a retrospective, ancient sound by purpose: “We don’t want to try and recreate something that we’ve done in our other bands,” says Lindberg. “And we know what we don’t want. There are bands that try too hard to recreate that old school sound, and they make it too dirty and too raw just for the sake of it. We want to make good recordings that sound heavy as fuck and are well produced, but at the same time we want to expose that raw nerve that is missing in some of the more modern stuff.” Songs like “Vortex Spawn”, “The Infernal Dread”, “Upon Black Winds”, “Winged Death” or “The Starving Gods Of Old” are best proof that THE LURKING FEAR accomplished this goal. A must-have for any death metal maniac out there!
THE HAUNTED are back with their 9th studio album “Strength In Numbers” and it turns out to be an aggressive, versatile and uncompromising sonic assault that is even more intense as its 2014 predecessor “Exit Wounds”, which marked the first album with Marco Aro on vocals since 2003. Next to Aro, THE HAUNTED consist of Jensen (Guitars), Ola Englund (Lead Guitars), Jonas Björler (Bass) and Adrian Erlandsson (Drums) and by tapping Russ Russell (Napalm Death, The Exploited, etc.) for production duties, “Strength In Numbers” sports a rawer, darker vibe resulting in an authentic, unrelenting monster of an album. A song like the merciless thrasher “Brute Force” lives totally up to its title, “Tighten The Noose” is another no-holds-barred attack, whereas “Preachers Of Death” offers a Pantera-like mid paced fury and “Spark” or “Means To An End” successfully unite thrash riffs with a gloomy atmosphere. To sum it up: A damn strong, f**king pissed off opus!

“Survivors” is the debut album by British heavy metal stalwarts Samson, originally released in 1979. Although vocalist Bruce Dickinson appears as a band member on the cover sheet, the album was completed before he joined the band, with guitarist Paul Samson on vocal duty. This deluxe digipack re-issue of the album features five bonus tracks with Dickinson singing some tracks from the original release.

NIGHTBRINGER are pushing forward in their fast-track evolution with grim determination. Their forthcoming fifth full-length 'Terra Damnata' takes at least as big a step into new musical dimensions as its predecessor 'Ego Dominus Tuus' (2014) – yet without straying from the band's original black course. While 'Ego Dominus Tuus' amalgamated traces of quintessential elements taken as inspiration from EMPEROR, DARK FUNERAL, and DIMMU BORGIR among other black classics into a dark American alloy, 'Terra Damnata' seems to systematically sever such ties to the previous orthodoxy found on 'Hierophany of the Open Grave' (2011). NIGHTBRINGER have sharpened their claws and unafraid of dissonance dare to take their songwriting where it hurts.
Madness reigns! BENIGHTED deliver the radical soundtrack to these savage times. With their new full-length ‘Necrobreed’, the French sidestep the steadily growing complexity of their previous albums by recalibrating their sound along their roots. ‘Necrobreed’ is the result of modern violence combined with an undercurrent of old school feeling. BENIGHTED keep their grinding influences but classic death metal clearly shows through the fabric. Those insane pig squeals are backed-up by massive growling and guest performances by vocalists Trevor Strnad (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER) and Arno (BLACK BOMB A). Crushing riffing and nuclear drumming meet subtle melodies and hidden hooks are fuelling the fury.
The 4 tracks of the legendary Jazz Progressive Metal formation Watchtower that were only available over digital version, are now available as the “Concepts of math: Book one” release.
